Sail BVI – Travel & Hotel

We are full time sailors that put together awesome sailing flotillas for the coolest people on the planet ;).  On the side … we make suggestions for booking your air, hotel, etc.; ’cause we’ve probably been there.  And if we come across a deal … we’ll make sure you know about it.

Flights …
The fly in airport is on Beef Island, part of Tortola. The airport code is EIS. Many will fly through San Juan, Puerto Rico – SJU. American Airlines services the islands of el Carib. As does Capeair.com, Liat.com, Seaborne and others. I usually start searching flights on Google.com/flights.  At this writing, LAX to EIS round trip was $765.

The boats are docked at Hodges Creek Marina, a quick 10 minute cab from the airport.  We have them from 5pm on Feb 3 to 10am on Feb 10.  We are staying aboard that first night.  I just confirmed with Eric Stone, he is playing at Bomba’s Surfside Shack that first night.  It happens to be one of Bomba’s legendary full moon partys.  It’s a cab ride over the island.

If you fly in even earlier, Eric is playing at beautiful Myett’s on Cane Garden Bay Jan 31st.

On the other end of our Adventure, Feb 10, I would not book a flight out until about 1pm. The islands are all close and ferry service is good if you need to fly home earlier.  Remember to stop at the departure tax booth to the left before you go through security.

Travel Docs …
Passport required for British Virgin Islands. It should be good for 6 months past arrival date. Click Here for US passport info. Canadian info Click Here.

Taxi …
The US dollar is the BVI currency. The airport is tiny. You can take any taxi.  “The rates are standard across the island and you can expect to pay $12 per person, a minimum of $27.”

I say, a good habit when traveling, to confirm the price before getting in.  Boats are at Dream Yacht Charters, Hodges Creek Marina.

Hotel …
Last time we stayed at Maria’s by the Sea.  It was nice enough, on the water, in town.  It was walking distance to all town has to offer – restaurants, gift shops, ferry terminal.

Convenience – Hodge’s Creek Marina Hotel is overlooking our charter boats.  It is between the airport and town though.  Most will need a cab to get to/from either.

Cane Garden Bay – on the other side of Tortola Island.  I have stayed at Myett’s and it was beautiful (sold out I hear).  You can’t beat apps and fruit punch overlooking that beach.  And there are others along that beach and to the south.

And there are other islands a ferry ride away – Virgin Gorda, Cooper, Norman, Salt, etc..  Bitter End and Scrub Island are a couple of the upscale resorts.

Anegada – Feeling crazy?  Head out to Anegada Island and stay in the secluded bay at Neptune’s Treasure or Anegada Reef Hotel.  Or on the Atlantic side at the Anegada Beach Club or Cow Wreck Beach Resort.  But we will be sailing there midweek (wx contingent).
